Time off pays off for Kats; Buffalo State loses
Sometimes, that bye week comes at just the right time.
While Erie Community College didn't need a week to heal up its football team, it definitely used the extra teaching time. With two weeks to prepare, the Kats were able to capitalize on a windy, rainy day, earning an 18-0 win over Milford Academy at Jim Ball Stadium.
Buffalo State didn't fare as well at home, dropping a 33-7 decision to William Paterson at Coyer Field.
In Orchard Park, the Kats (3-5) capitalized on a solid defensive performance and turned Milford miscues into points.
ECC got on the board in the second quarter when the Kats sustained an 11-play, 53-yard drive after an interception by Bill Lauch. Zedric Joseph had the score on a 6-yard run.
Joseph then broke free for a 72-yard touchdown run after Milford missed a field goal attempt.
In the fourth quarter, Rashad Payne put a stamp on the win with a 32-yard interception return.
ECC missed all three point-after conversions.
The Kats' offense had 215 yards on a sloppy field in windy conditions while the defense held Milford to 156 yards and an 0-for-3 day in the red zone.
"The offensive line started clicking and we controlled the ball," coach Dennis Greene said. "The defensive line controlled the line of scrimmage. ... With the bye week, we weren't hurt, it was just another opportunity to hound them and teach them. It was great to teach for a week and not have to worry about a game. Now they can say, "Wow, that paid off.' The bye week helped tremendously because the younger kids understand that college speed is different than high school speed."
The Kats close out their home schedule on Saturday, hosting Georgia Military.
At Coyer Field, William Patterson scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Buffalo State took a 7-0 lead at 10:37 of the first quarter, Ryan Lehotsky scored on 5-yard run, capping a five-play, 44-yard drive.
William Patterson tied the game in the second and went up, 14-7, in the third.
The Bengals (1-7) had just 52 yards of total offense and did not complete a pass the entire game. They travel to Hamilton, N.Y., to play Morrisville State on Saturday at Colgate's Andy Kerr Stadium.
