College report: UB picked third in MAC East
The University at Buffalo has been selected to finish third in the six-team East Division in the Mid-American Conference men's basketball preseason poll released Wednesday. UB senior guard Rodney Pierce (Hutch-Tech) was named to the All-MAC East preseason team.
Akron was picked to finish first in the East and received 190 points overall and 19 votes to win the MAC Tournament. UB received two votes to win the tournament; Northern Illinois, Kent State and Bowling Green all received one.
Akron was followed in the East by Kent State (108), UB (97), Miami (78), Bowling Green (54) and Ohio (32). Kent State received three first-place votes, while UB and Bowling Green each received one. Central Michigan (113) was picked to finish first in the West Division.
Joining Pierce on the All-MAC East team were Miami's Kenny Hayes, Akron's Brett McKnight and Anthony "Humpty" Hitches and Kent State's Chris Singletary.
Women's basketball
UB junior Kourtney Brown was named to the preseason All-MAC East Division team. Brown set a UB single-season record with 532 points last season.
Women's soccer
Buffalo State notched three second-half goals to close out the regular season with a 3-0 win over Elmira at Coyer Field. Amanda Sauer (Orchard Park) scored on a penalty kick and Barb Kiliszek (Lancaster) and Leigh Krzyzanowski scored unassisted goals for the Bengals (8-4-5).
Buffalo State hosts Geneseo at 3:15 p.m. Saturday in the SUNYAC quarterfinals.
Field hockey
Oneonta junior Ainsley Stoll (Williamsville North) was selected as SUNYAC Player of the Year. Stoll leads her team with 14 goals and 30 points. Her career totals include 37 goals and 81 points in 54 games.
