Brand accepts award

Story tools:

Ailing NCAA President Myles Brand made a rare public appearance to accept an award for his work on behalf of young athletes.

The 67-year-old NCAA president has scaled back his appearances recently after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and spoke for less than five minutes Sunday night in Indianapolis.

Brand appeared thinner in his suit but spoke with the same passion he used to persuade opponents in past battles. He shared the stage with Jack Nicklaus and WNBA star Tamika Catchings, who also were honored for their work with young people.
