Last season, three transfers helped Niagara University to an appearance in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament championship game. Niagara coach Joe Mihalich hopes Kevon Moore will do the same.
The school announced Tuesday that Moore is transferring from North Carolina- Wilmington and after sitting out the 2009-10 season becomes eligible for 2010-11. The 6-foot-3 guard will have three years of eligibility remaining.
Moore was the Seahawks’ fourth leading scorer, averaging 9.1 ppg., and 4.1 rpg., in 27 games as a freshman. He scored in double figures 11 times, achieving a high of 17 points twice. Moore played his high school basketball in Rockville, Md.
“Kevon is a basketball junkie who has a passion for the game,” Mihalich said. “He is your classic combo guard who is very good at everything. During his redshirt year, he will work every day against our seniors and both parties will benefit.”
Mihalich has done well with transfers in the past. Bilal Benn, who transferred from Villanova, was the Purple Eagles’ second-leading scorer last season, while Rob Garrison (Niagara Falls) left Connecticut and was the team’s fourth-leading scorer. Center Benson Egemonye, who was Niagara’s third-leading scorer in his final season, played at Northeastern.
In other college basketball news, Duke’s Gerald Henderson has signed with an agent and will remain in the NBA draft. The school said the 6-foot-4 junior, a third team Associated Press All-American last season, has signed with Arn Tellem, becoming the 10th player under coach Mike Krzyzewski to leave early for the NBA.
