Men’s lacrosse
Fourth-ranked Cornell scored just five seconds into the game and handed Canisius its third straight loss to a nationally-ranked opponent, 14-4, in Ithaca. Freshman Jimmy Haney led the Golden Griffins with two goals while sophomore Nick LoCocco had a goal and an assist, and sophomore Adam Jones had a single tally. Canisius will open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play against Marist at 1 p. m. on Saturday in Poughkeepsie.
Women’s lacrosse
• Freshman Karen Shaddock had two goals and a Buffalo State record six assists in the Bengals’ 13-12 victory over Niagara at Coyer Field. Liz Eddy scored the winning goal with 1:41 remaining. Katie Henderson had five goals for the Bengals while Molly Seifritz had three tallies. Erralyn Thomas led the Purple Eagles with five goals.
• St. Bonaventure (2-2) rallied from two goals down for an 11-10 victory at Binghamton. Molly Hastrich’s fourth goal of the game broke a 10-all tie with 4:38 left.
Diving
Fredonia State senior Kelly Sponholz (Alden) will be making her fourth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., March 16-18.
An eight-time SUNYAC champion in both 1-meter and 3-meter springboard diving, Sponholz’s best finish in the nationals was third in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter her sophomore year. Last year, she was sixth in the 3- meter and seventh in the 1-meter.
Indoor track
Buffalo State junior sprinter Latoya Edwards will be looking to become the school’s first female national champion at the NCAA Division III Championships this weekend at the Rose-Hulman Institute in Terre Haute, Ind. Edwards will make her third consecutive appearance in the 55-meter dash national championship. Edwards made All-America with a third-place finish last season. She had a season-best time of 7.20 seconds in last weekend’s ECAC Championships. The prelims will be Friday at 5:25 p. m. and the finals will be run at 3:15 p. m. on Saturday.
Honors
• Melissa Kanalley (Cardinal O’Hara) of D’Youville was named first team All-North Eastern Athletic Conference after a season in which she averaged 14.7 points a game and was in double-digits in 24 of 27 games played. Holly Beats (Iroquois) was a second team selection while Christine Halter, who finished her career as D’Youville’s all-time scoring leader, made the third team.
• Charles Walker (Amherst, Niagara County CC) capped his D’Youville career by making All- NEAC for the second straight season. Walker was fifth in the conference in scoring (16.9). In just two seasons he finished seventh on the school’s all-time scoring list with 935 points.
