NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma’s record-setting offense will be without its most versatile player Jan. 8, when the Sooners play Florida in the BCS national championship game in Miami.

Starting running back De- Marco Murray, the team’s all-purpose yardage leader (2,171), will undergo surgery Monday and won’t play in the title game. The sophomore from Las Vegas has a partial rupture of a hamstring tendon in his left leg.

Murray was injured Dec. 6 returning the opening kickoff of Oklahoma’s Big 12 title game victory over Missouri. Murray suffered a helmet-to-knee hit while being tackled and didn’t return to the game. The injury was initially diagnosed as a bruise, but an MRI test performed Dec. 8 revealed the additional damage and that surgery would be needed.

“Obviously, we’re very disappointed for DeMarco,” Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said in a statement. “He has been an important part of our success this year and we will miss his contributions.”

Murray, the team’s second-leading rusher with 1,002 yards, will be replaced by Mossis Madu. Chris Brown leads the Sooners with 1,010 yards.

“With Chris Brown and Mossis Madu, we still have two very fine backs,” Stoops said. “Our team has a lot of confidence in their abilities.”

Murray also had 395 receiving yards and was second on the team with 18 touchdowns. He will be able to resume training in about five months.
