News and notes

Then and now: Twenty years ago this week, No. 1 Notre Dame routed Rice, 54-11, to improve to 9-0 and move within three wins of the national championship. On Saturday in Boston, the Irish fell to Boston College, 17-0, their sixth straight loss to the Eagles.

California dreamin’: Ten months after facing Southern California in the Rose Bowl, Illinois lost to Western Michigan, 23-17, in Detroit. The Fighting Illini fell to 5-5 and have two more shots to qualify for a bowl: next week against 12th-ranked Ohio State and on Nov. 22 at No. 25 Northwestern.

Re-buffed: Iowa State dropped its eighth straight, 28-24 at Colorado, and this one hurt. In the face of the Folsom Field crowd, the Cyclones (2-8, 0-6 Big 12) drove to Colorado’s 1- yard line with three seconds remaining, but tailback Alexander Robinson was stuffed by Daniel Dykes and Jimmy Smith for a loss.

Stanford smarts: Down by 17-10 to Oregon in the second quarter, Stanford lined up for a 25-yard field goal. Holder Bo McNally took the snap and dashed 8 yards through the middle of the line for a tying touchdown. But Oregon wound up winning the game, 35-28.

Saturday’s stars

• Iowa’s Daniel Murray kicked a 31-yard field goal with one second to play to lift the Hawkeyes to a 24-23 victory over No. 3 Penn State. It was Murray’s second field goal in four tries this season.

• Georgia defensive lineman Demarcus Dobbs picked off a screen pass by Kentucky quarterback Randall Cobb to preserve the No. 13 Bulldogs’ 42-38 win over the Wildcats. The play killed a Kentucky drive deep in Georgia territory in the final minute.

• Nebraska nose tackle Ndamukong Suh, who weighs 300 pounds, had a career-best 12 tackles and caught a 2-yard touchdown pass as the Cornhuskers defeated Kansas, 45-35.
