College report: Canisius, Niagara advance to MAAC tourney

Canisius tied and Niagara lost its regular-season finale Sunday but both women's soccer teams are going to Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Canisius, the fifth seed, plays No. 4 Iona at 1:30 p.m. while sixth-seeded Niagara plays No. 3 Fairfield at 11 a.m.

Canisius freshman Brooke Bandazian scored her second collegiate goal as the Golden Griffins tied visiting Fairfield, 1-1. Niagara seniors Chiara Greco and Ashley Mandrino both scored in a 3-2 overtime loss to Iona.

Women's volleyball

Niagara's school-record eight-match win streak was snapped Sunday in a five-set loss at Fairfield, 15-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-6.

Hannah Hedrick totaled 16 kills and 11 digs for her 20th double-double of the season. She was also one of five Purple Eagles with at least three blocks, adding four stuffs and four assists. Freshman Kari Honomichl added 15 kills.
