College report: Canisius notches win
Cory Conacher scored on a penalty shot with 5:36 left to give Canisius a 4-3 victory over Mercyhurst at the Buffalo State Ice Arena and a sweep of its two-game weekend home-and-home series against the Lakers on Saturday night. Canisius (4-6, 3-3 AH) was awarded the penalty shot when a Mercyhurst defenseman closed his hand over the puck in the crease.
Josh Heidinger and Vince Scarsella (St. Francis) scored to give Canisius a 2-0 first period lead. Mercyhurst tied it early in the third before Carl Hudson put the Griffs back in front. Mercyhurst tied it again before Conacher's game-winner. Goalie Dan Morrison made 26 saves for Canisius
Men's soccer
Medaille (17-2-2) advanced to the NCAA Division III tournament for the fourth time in five years after clinching the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference playoff championship with a 1-0 victory over Penn State-Behrend at All High Stadium. Josh Meier (Holland) scored the winning goal for the Mavericks. Goalkeeper Ryan Goettel made three saves for Medaille's 16th shutout in 21 games this season and 10th in a row. The Mavs have allowed only five goals all season.
UB (7-9-1, 2-4 Mid-American Conference) closed out the 2009 season with a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. Senior forward Dan Bulley scored the game-winning goal on a breakaway off a long-bouncing goal kick by Nick Fetterman with 8 seconds left in the second overtime. The Broncos tallied the first goal of the game in the 86th minute but UB answered that in just over a minute when Alex Marrello sent a backside pass to Mike Unwin, who fired a shot past the Broncos' goalkeeper Casey Aubil.
Men's basketball
UB used a 28-10 run early in the first half and held on in the second half for an 82-67 win over Daemen, in an exhibition game Saturday night at Alumni Arena. The Bulls got off to a quick start as sophomore transfer Zach Filzen hit six of his seven three-pointers in the first half, giving the Bulls an early 20-point lead. Filzen had 18 points at the half, 21 overall. Junior Max Boudreau added 15. The Bulls will begin the regular season at 5:30 p.m. next Sunday against Vermont in Alumni Arena.
Women's hockey
Niagara (4-4-2, 1-1-0 CHA) earned a split of its opening College Hockey America series at Syracuse by defeating the Orange, 3-2, as Caitlin Jenkins scored on the power play with 1:48 left. Freshman Jenna Hendrikx and Jennifer McLean score first period goals for the Purple Eagles.
Wrestling
UB opened its home schedule with a 31-9 win over Ashland as sophomores Kevin Smith (133 pounds), John-Martin Cannon (165) and junior Jimmy Hamel (197) registered falls. Senior Andrew Stella (Sweet Home) scored a major decision (12-0) at 157 pounds.
