Canisius comeback falls one game short

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

TRENTON, N. J.—Canisius forced the decisive game in the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship, but the Golden Griffins weren’t able to rally from a day-one loss and fell, 13-9, to Marist Saturday at Waterfront Park.

The Golden Griffins won the first game, 5-4, on Saturday to send the teams to a winner- takes-all championship game. Canisius finishes the season with a 36-22 record and advanced to the championship round of the MAAC tournament for the first time.

“We just ran out of bullets today,” said Canisius coach Mike McRae. “It’s very difficult to rebound from a first game loss and win four games in two days. I’m proud of the way our team battled through adversity with three consecutive one-run wins to force the championship game, but in the end we just didn’t have enough to complete the comeback.”

In the title game, Canisius took a 3-0 lead after two innings on RBIs from Kevin Mahoney, Branson Joseph and Steve McQuail.

The Red Foxes (31-26) chipped away at the Canisius lead, scoring single runs in the second and third before breaking through for six runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead. Marist needed only four hits in the inning as the Griffs went through four pitchers in the frame.

After two hits to start the inning off Canisius starter Mike Goemans, the Red Foxes had the next four batters reach without a hit. The Red Foxes eventually got the big hit as Brian McDonough cleared the bases with a three-run double to put Marist up by five.
