Canisius extended its school record winning streak to 13 games and improved to 35-14 on the season with a 13-4 nonconference victory over Niagara at the Demske Sports Complex. It’s the second longest winning streak going in NCAA Division I.
Connor Panas went 3 for 5 with four runs scored and two RBIs as eight of the nine starters hit safely for the Golden Griffins, who have won 12 in a row over Niagara. The Griffs broke the game open with six runs in the fourth. Freshman Josh Shepley, one of five pitchers used by Canisius picked up the win, pitching five innings.
Canisius pitcher Rohn Pierce, a junior from Lockport, has been selected to the watch list for the 2014 Gregg Olson Award. The award is named after former Auburn Tigers star pitcher Gregg Olson, who went on to be the American League Rookie of the Year and a Major League All-Star.
In 13 starts, Pierce is 10-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 97.2 innings.
