Connor Panas hit a two-run walkoff home run to give the Canisius baseball team a 12-11 win over the University at Buffalo (8-6) at the Demske Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Griffins improved to 11-7 on the season and won their home opener for the third time in the last four seasons.
Freshman Jake Lumley was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBIs while senior Ronnie Bernick went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs as Canisius had 16 hits in the game.
UB, which once led, 7-3, had regained the lead at 11-10 on with two runs in the top of the ninth. Mike Scarcello (Timon-St. Jude) came home on a sacrifice fly by Vinny Mallaro, and Tyler Mautner’s two-out single sent Nick Sinay home with the go-ahead run. In the Canisius ninth, Bernick led off with a single. One out later, Panas hit a 2-1 pitch from Kevin Hughes (Starpoint) over the right-field fence to win it.
