Canisius could have picked a better opponent to try to snap a three-game losing streak and notch its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women’s basketball victory of the season.
The Griffs (4-7, 0-2 MAAC) will face nine-time defending MAAC champion Marist at 2 p.m. today in the McCann Center in Poughkeepsie. The Red Foxes have won the last 10 games in the rivalry since a 68-60 Canisius victory at McCann in 2009.
Marist (7-4, 1-0 MAAC) is on a tear, having won its last six including a 76-69 victory on Dec. 21 at home against Oklahoma, which was ranked 19th and 20th in the country. Coach Brian Giorgis has a balanced lineup with all five starters averaging in double figures led by Madeline Blais (15.8). Senior Jamie Ruttle is the only Griff in double figures (11.0)
Niagara (2-8, 0-1) will be on the road, too. The Purple Eagles will try to end a three-game losing streak at Fairfield (6-4, 1-0) at 2 p.m. Senior guard Chanel Johnson leads NU at 11.8 ppg.
