Today, Charlie Garfinkel, the Racket Sports writer for the Buffalo News, will be honored in Minneapolis at the U.S. Open Racquetball Championships. The “Racquetball Legends Event” honors all the players who are in the National Hall of Fame, which includes Garfinkel and 30 other all-time greats.

Garfinkel, who will also speak at the event, was the first player in the sport’’s history to sign a professional contract and the ninth player to be inducted into the National Racquetball Hall of Fame.

He was ranked as high as No. 5 on the pro tour and was ranked for three years in the nation’s top 10 players. In addition, he was Buffalo City Champion 14 times, including 13 years in a row, and was city doubles champion nine times.

He is the author of two racquetball books, “Racquetball the Easy Way” and “Racquetball for the Serious Player.” He was the featured writer for Racquetball Magazine and numerous other racquetball magazines. He was the color commentator for the National Pro Men’s Open finals for ESPN and had his own local show on Empire Cable for 20 years.

Matthew Jackson of Williamsville, a seventh grader at St. Gregory the Great, was named tour champion in the boys age 11 division of the U.S. Kids Golf Niagara Fall Tour last weekend. As a result of being named tour champion in his division, Matt is invited to play in the 2014 U.S. Kids World Golf Championship at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina July 31-Aug 2, 2014.

BASEBALL: The Cheektowaga Knights have openings in their travel programs for ages 9–15. The organization will be playing in a local travel league on Sundays.
