U.S. Junior National Team members Anita Alvarez, Kenmore/Town of Tonawanda Aquettes, and Sandra Ortellado, Walnut Creek, Calif., gained international experience Saturday at the Brazil Synchro Open, swimming to a seventh-place finish in the free duet. Alvarez and Ortellado finished with 79.400 points. Two Ukraine duets won gold (89.833 points) and silver (86.233), and Italy was third with 86.033 points. Alvarez and Ortellado also competed in a friendly figures competition with junior Brazilian swimmers, finishing first and second. Ortellado had the top score with 74.3527 points and Alvarez finished second with 73.0364 points. The top Brazilian finisher had 70.9782 points.

BASKETBALL: The eighth Barnyard Classic 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held on June 28 in Russell, Pa. This fully-refereed event for boys and girls ages 6-19 is held on 10 permanent outdoor courts at Eisenhower High School. Last year’s tournament saw 100 teams from 59 towns in Pennsylvania, New York and Ohio. For $88, teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games with a maximum 16 teams in any one bracket.
