The Excel Team from Niagara Gymnastics dominated at the 33rd annual Niagara Cup competition on March 8 at the Koessler Center. As the only competitor in the Silver division, Jordan Buono placed first on all events, and took the all-around with a score of 33.825.
Emma Kwiatkowski took first all-around in the Gold division with a score of 35.55. Kwiatkowski also took first place on beam (9.10) and bars (9.05), and received a third place medals on vault (8.35) as well as second place on floor exercise (9.05). Teammate Angelina Presutti placed second all-around in the competition with an overall score of 34.575. Presutti was also awarded a first place medal on floor exercise (9.225), second place on vault (8.50). Madison Gibson took third all-around with an overall score of 34.30. She was also awarded third place on bars (8.825) and first place on vault (8.65).
In the Platinum division, Taylor Miller won the all-around with a score of 35.95. Miller also won first place on vault (8.90) and beam (8.95); and was second in bars (9.050) and floor (9.050). Victoria Hartwell received a second place medal on vault.
The West Side Rowing Club has recognized ten individuals for their hard work and dedication.
The Cotter Award, presented annually by Bill and Mary Ellen Cotter to a scholastic female for notable achievement, was presented to Tessa Yurko (Buffalo). The Irv Treubel Memorial Award, presented to an outstanding coxswain, was given to Andrew Gaulin (Buffalo). The James B. Schaab Sr. Award, presented annually by James R. and Dennis R. Schaab to an outstanding high school oarsman, was presented to John Paul Scaduto (Kenmore). The Mary Clare Kane Award in recognition of achievement and dedication by a coxswain was presented to Zoey Binder (Buffalo).
The Melissa Hale Spencer Award, presented annually by Bill and Mary Ellen Cotter to an outstanding Club Woman, was given to Kellie Solowski (Hamburg). The Michael Broderick Plate, presented by Thomas M. and Colena M. Schaab for character, leadership and sportsmanship, was presented to Will Downing (Buffalo).
The Officer’s Award, presented for outstanding commitment to the WSRC mission, was presented to Rachel Hirschbeck (Kenmore), Eric Schifferle (Buffalo), Matt Cosman (Buffalo) and Ashley Wodzinski (Lakeview).
BASEBALL/SOFTBALL: The third annual Baseball/Softball Expo and Sale is Saturday at Eastern Hills Mall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Deals on apparel, bags, batting helmets, gloves, bats, shoes and other accessories will be featured. Players can have their gloves custom fit with the Mizuno Steamer. The new bats for 2014 will also be available to demo. Joe Barth of The Hit Doctor Academy will also be on hand.
BASKETBALL: Upstate Basketball will hold a one day exposure event for high school seniors and any aspiring college basketball players. The event will be a 3-game, one-day tournament held at Onondaga Central High School in Nedrow, near Syracuse. The date is April 12 for boys, and April 19 for girls. FOOTBALL: Jason Mangone, head football coach at Brockport State, will be the featured clinician for the WNY Football Coaches Association meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Elks Lodge, 33 Legion Parkway, Lancaster.
