Kaylee M. Sandel and Kimberly Klinger were the recipients of $1,000 scholarship awards at the 60th annual Bowling Proprietors Association of Western New York championship awards dinner Wednesday at Salvatore’s Italian Gardens.

Sandel received the association’s 26th annual scholarship. Klinger, who bowled for Frontier and was a Section VI All-Star, received the Lori Klahn Scholarship Award.

Besides Sandel and Klinger, the BPA of WNY presented more than 90 youngsters with trophies and awarded another $8,000 in scholarships to Senior Boys and Girls winners of seasonal tournaments held at Broadway Sports Center, Recckio’s Lanes and Springville Lanes.

Scholarship winners and the lanes they represented were: Sarah Godfrey (Broadway), Michael Morehouse Jr. (Manor II), Haley Carroll (Transit), Justin Sokolowski (Transit), Haley Sieber (AMF Thruway), Jonathon Sanchez (Kenmore), Abbey Kieffer (Manor II), Bradley Arnold (Arcade), Brittany Sullivan (Springville), Zachary Andruszko (Orchard Park), Kaitlyn Kelly (Orchard Park) and Joseph Scapillato (Broadway).

The STARS of WNY earned a berth in the AAU Eighth Grade Girls National Basketball Championship tournament by winning the New York State AAU title in Lyons last weekend. The STARS capped a 4-0 tournament run with a 62-51 victory over the Syracuse Nets in the title game. It was WNY’s second win in the tournament over Syracuse, which was ranked 12th in the nation.

Emma Brinker (East Aurora), Erica Martinsen (Williamsville) and Sara Pfieffer (Olean) led the scoring for the STARS while Jane Chiacchia (Hamburg) and Micaela Ryan (Clarence) contributed solid defense. Other team members are Lauren Lassiter (Orchard Park), Emma Oar (East Aurora), Kaylee Guy (Williamsville), Ally Haskell (Franklinville) and Morgan Davis (Allegany).

The STARS will compete for the national championship in Division I at ESPN Wide Word of Sports in Orlando, Fla., in July.
