Kaitlin Hawayek and Jean-Luc Baker, the reigning U.S. junior silver medalists, won the silver medal at the 2013 Junior Grand Prix Final as part of the International Skating Union Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final. Hawayek, of East Aurora, represents the Detroit Skating Club, while Baker, of Washington, represents the Seattle Skating Club. In their second season as a team, Hawayek and Baker finished their Junior Grand Prix season strong, placing second in both segments of the event. The gold medal went to Anna Yanovskaya and Sergey Mozgov of Russia.
HOCKEY: The Pepsi Kids beginner instruction program will start on Dec. 22 at Holiday Twin Rinks in Cheektowaga. The six session program is open to boys and girls ages 4–9 with limited experience and will feature instruction as well as cross-rink scrimmage game situations. If needed, the rink will provide skates and a helmet with cage at no charge for the first few sessions. Cost is $75. The Buffalo Stars U16 full season team will play a charity exhibition game against the Buffalo Sabres Thunder on Dec. 21 at Holiday Twin Rinks as part of the Buffalo Stars Annual Christmas Party and Food Drive. The Buffalo Sabres Thunder is an organization that provides males and females with developmental disabilities an opportunity to play ice hockey. The game will be played at 6:30 p.m. following the Buffalo Stars Annual Family Skating Party. Spectators are asked to make a donation of non-perishable food items for admission.
