Casey Kacz and Mike Doherty hooked up on long scoring passes on successive plays, and Buffalo State (5-4, 3-3) went on to a 59-41 Empire 8 Conference victory over Hartwick (4-4, 1-4) Saturday at Wright Stadium in Oneonta.

Meanwhile at Jim Ball Stadium in Orchard Park, Erie Community College (2-7) dropped its season finale to Monroe College of the Bronx, 9-8,

Kacz (Sweet Home) connected with Doherty (Kenmore East) for 74 yards on the Bengals’ second play. On their next series, they immediately hooked up for 68 yards. Despite that, the Bengals didn’t take the lead for good until Kacz threw a 26-yard TD pass to Sherman Nelson (Cardinal O’Hara) to make it 28-21 with 4:08 left in the second quarter. The second of Rich Pete’s four rushing touchdowns made it 35-21 with 37 seconds left in the half.

Pete had 132 yards on 16 carries in helping Buffalo State to its third consecutive victory. Kacz completed 20 of 25 for 347 yards and added 19 rushing yards, giving him the school record 781 for a quarterback. The previous mark of 762 was by Dan Sansanese in 1983.

Doherty had four catches for 158 yards and returned the second-half kickoff 73 yards to set up a touchdown. Nelson had five receptions for 123. Jeff McDuffie tied a school record with three interceptions.

Buffalo State will conclude its regular season next Saturday at home against St. John Fisher at noon.

ECC and Monroe slogged through the mud on a rainy, cold day that was not conducive to much offense. Fred Haynes returned a fumble 35 yards to give the Kats a 6-3 lead early in the second half but Monroe took the lead, 9-6, on a 21-yard touchdown run by Robert Jackson before giving up a safety.

Leading rusher for the Kats was Tyler Robinson (Starpoint) with 21 yards on six attempts while Khalil Sommerville (Bennett) had eight tackles, Kareem Manns seven and a fumble recovery and Ryan Johnson (West Seneca East) six.
