Reggie Witherspoon, the former head basketball coach at the University at Buffalo who was hired this week as an assistant coach at Alabama, was a guest on Friday’s Bucky & Sully Show.
Witherspoon lost his job at UB about a year ago.
“I was pretty miserable. My family and close friends saw that,” he said. “It’s a very difficult, very challenging time. The first thing you feel is useless, but it’s good to have people stay on your side.”
Eventually, Witherspoon used the year off to try to learn more about the coaching profession.
“I just traveled around, and watched practices and games. I saw teams at Division III, Division II, Division I and the NBA. On Thanksgiving morning, I watched the Raptors practice for a game with the Miami Heat. You don’t get to do that when you coach a team.”
Now Witherspoon said he’s thrilled to be headed to Alabama.
“As soon as you hit campus, you can feel the difference. Everything is big down there,” he said.
“When you’re an assistant, you’re not worrying about delegating authority. I want to assist Anthony Grant in any way I can.”
The Bucky & Sully Show airs at 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Fridays.
