The quest for the New York State Golden Gloves championships are officially underway as 21 male and female amateur boxers advanced to the next round of the tournament on Feb. 22 by earning opening night victories Saturday at The Tralf in downtown Buffalo.
In open class bouts involving Buffalo-area fighters, pugilists from Westside Boxing Club and UB Boxing Club had good nights.
From Westside Boxing, Jeffrey Nguyot earned a 2-1 decision over Oscar Peralta of Syracuse’s Rinaldi’s Boxing at 132. In the same weight class, Daniel DeJesus of Westside triumphed by 2-1 decision over Mike Vega of Casal’s Boxing Club in Niagara Falls.
UB Boxing Club’s Mike Christopher advanced with ease at 152-pound open, earning a 3-0 win over Charles Garner of Buffalo Police Athletic League. UB Club teammate Tim Akadoulou earned a 3-0 decision at 165 over Omar Osmen of Roc Boxing.
Donald Marshall, who’s trained by past national Golden Gloves champion and Buffalo Ring 44 Hall of Famer Ross Thompson, dropped a 3-0 decision at 165 to Jimmy Garcia of Rinaldi Boxing.
Fighting as unattached in the 141-pound open class, Trevon Hopkins scored a 3-0 win over Jack Grady.
In a sub-novice class bout at 165, UB Boxing’s Ryan Nicastro won via second-round stoppage, one of just four wins via TKO on Saturday.
