OLEAN — The St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team got off to a quick start on its way to its third win a in row, 74-59 over visiting Fairfield. Gabby Richmond had a career high 21 points and Chelsea Bowker matched her career-best five three-pointers to finish with 19 points.

The Bonnies jumped to leads of 13-3 and 29-16 before the Stags rallied to within 38-35 at halftime. Bona reasserted itself in the second half, going on a 17-5 run for its largest lead of the game, 55-40.

Three different times the Stags came within nine points, but that’s as close as they would get.

“I’m really proud of our reaction for the second half,” said coach Jim Crowley. “They had momentum and we have kids that were in this situation for the first time. We passed the ball as well as we’ve passed the ball all year, that number of assists [19] is very good for us. Lot of positives.”

The Bonnies will host Big Four rival Niagara on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Canisius (1-1) travels to Rutgers (2-1) tonight at 7:30 where they will play in the NIT Season Tip-Off North Regional. Elon and Drexel square off at 5 p.m.

The Canisius-Rutgers winner will play the Elon/Drexel winner at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Canisius and the Scarlet Knights have never met. Rutgers is 1-0 all-time against Elon and 13-1 all-time versus Drexel.

The Griffs are coming off an 86-64 loss to St. Bonaventure on Saturday. They opened the season with a win over South Dakota. Rutgers edged Yale, 72-71, in its last start. Rutgers took the lead for good on a three-pointer by J.J. Moore with 30 seconds left.

Against Canisius, the Bonnies opened the second half on a 28-10 run to pull away, leading by as many as 28 in the second half. Billy Baron scored 23 points for the Griffins and Chris Perez added 13. Baron is averaging 25 ppg. through two games.

Last season, Canisius posted a 20-14 record, the first 20-win season since 2000-01.
