OLEAN — St. Bonaventure’s women’s basketball team seized control of a back-and-forth contest late in the first half and never relinquished its hold on the lead in beating Richmond, 55-43, in an Atlantic 10 contest at the Reilly Center on Wednesday.
The game was part of a doubleheader that included the Bona men also squaring off against Richmond in the Bonnies’ A-10 opener.
In Wednesday’s opener, Katie Healy (Lancaster) finished with her fourth double-double of the season as she piled up game highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds.
She, along with Nyla Rueter, combined for 16 points during the final 20 minutes to help Bona pull away after it went into the intermission with slim 24-23 edge. Both connected on 11-of-17 shots from the floor with Rueter making both of her three-point attempts en route to finishing with 12 points. Healy also went 4 for 5 from the free-throw line.
Healy and Rueter combined to score the Bonnies’ first 10 points of the second half. Bona (12-5, 1-1) shot 12 for 19 from the floor during the final 20 minutes after shooting 7 of 23 in the first half and led by as many as 13 points with two minutes left.
Rueter scored a career-high 20 points in Bona’s previous game, a 73-65 loss to Duquesne last week.
Genevieve Okoro and Janelle Hubbard each scored 11 points for Richmond (7-9, 1-2).
Gabby Richmond had a season-high five assists to go along with nine points for St. Bonaventure, which hits the road for a 5 p.m. Saturday clash against Dayton at University of Dayton Arena.
On Wednesday, the game featured eight lead changes during the first half. Bona seized the lead for good with just over four minutes remaining. Both Healy and Rueter tallied six points each in the opening 20 minutes.
