Walk-off homer dooms Herd in Toledo
TOLEDO, Ohio — Scott Sizemore’s walk-off home run gave the Toledo Mud Hens a wild, 11-10, win over the Buffalo Bisons as 10,700 looked on at Fifth Third Field. Sizemore’s solo shot easily cleared the 365 sign in left. It was his second home run of the night as Toledo pounded out 17 hits against four Bisons pitchers.
Sizemore’s game-winner came off lefthander Jon Switzer (0-3). The Bisons pitching staff had allowed just 18 earned runs in its last 10 games before allowing 11 earned on Saturday.
The game, which took 3 hours and 38 minutes, saw the Mud Hens put together a pair of five-run innings to record their 16th come-from-behind victory. The game was the opener of a four-game series.
Toledo appeared as though it wouldn’t need to play the home half of the ninth. A bases-clearing triple by Brent Dlugach plated three runs giving Toledo a 10-8 lead after eight.
But the Bisons, who were down to their final strike in the ninth, rallied to tie it, 10-10, thanks to a two-run triple by Argenis Reyes.
The Herd finished with 15 hits, including three each by Mike Lamb, Jesus Feliciano and Reyes.
Lamb drove in three runs with a pair of doubles and a single. He went 3 for 4 for the second consecutive night and has eight hits in his last 12 at-bats.
Feliciano extended his season-high hitting streak to nine games and raised his team-high average to .315.
The Bisons jumped out to a 5-0 lead after their first four at-bats. They gave it all back as Toledo answered scoring five runs in its half of the fourth.
The Toledo runs were charged to Bison starter Kyle Snyder, who was making his third consecutive start. Snyder struggled against the Mud Hens, lasting just 3c innings. He was touched for nine hits, including three home runs.
Herd reliver Tim McNab had his 14-inning consecutive scoreless innings streak snapped after giving up a two-run home run in the eighth inning.
The series continues tonight (6:30 p. m., Radio 1520 AM). Nelson Figueroa (7-5, 2.25 ERA) is the scheduled starter for the Bisons against Chris Lambert (5-7, 3.74).
