Herd ends road trip with a win

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Story tools:

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Buffalo Bisons headed home as winners Friday night.

The Herd completed an eight-game road trip with a 7-5 win over Gwinnett before 7,153 that lifted the Bisons’ record on this trip to 4-4.

Buffalo’s last winning road trip came July 25-Aug. 1 of last year.

The Herd relied on good starting pitching and hot bats in Friday’s win. On the mound, Nelson Figueroa (3-4) scattered eight hits and allowed only one run in six innings.

At the plate, Cory Sullivan went 4 for 5 with two doubles to lead the Bisons’ offense.

“Sullivan’s been swinging the bat well,” Buffalo manager Ken Oberkfell said. “Him and [Jesus] Feliciano at the top of the order . . . when those guys get on base, usually good things happen. We need them to be the table-setters and they’ve been doing a nice job.”

Sullivan started the game with a double to right field off starter and loser John Halama (0-1) and scored on a two-out single by Emil Brown.

Buffalo padded its lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning on a fielder’s choice. Javier Castillo made it 3-0 with a homer in the sixth.

“Castillo’s been swinging the bat real well,” Oberkfell said. “He’s got some pop and he can play anywhere in the infield and he brings us some veteran leadership. We need guys like that.”

Gwinett finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth with a run. Both teams scored a run in the seventh. The Bisons put the game away with three runs in the top of the eighth, highlighted by a two-run double by Feliciano, which offset three Gwinett runs in the ninth.

The Bisons return home tonight (7:05 p. m., Radio 1520 AM) to face the Charlotte Knights at Coca-Cola Field. The Famous Chicken will be appearing tonight.

Sunday is “Dog Day at the Ballpark,” as fans will be allowed to sit on the right-field berm with their dogs.

In addition, any fan who donates two canned food items or $2 at a Bisons game from Saturday through Tuesday will receive a two-for-one ticket voucher to the Bisons’ game with Toledo on July 16.
