Gwinnett rallies past Bisons
GWINNETT, Ga. — Bisons starter Lance Broadway, working with a two-run lead, “hit the wall” in the sixth inning, as the Gwinnett Braves rallied for three runs and a 5-4 victory over Buffalo on Tuesday night in the opener of a four-game International League series between the teams.
The Herd, 9-15 in one-run games this season, has lost three straight one-run games on this southern trip after winning the previous five.
Broadway (1-2) allowed just three hits through five innings and had two out with a runner on in the sixth. After Broadway walked Antonio Perez, pinch-hitter Greg Norton, on a rehab assignment from Atlanta, stepped in and tripled to right field, tying the game at 4-4. Norton scored when Reid Gorecki followed with a single. Box score
The Bisons never recovered. They went down in order in the seventh and eighth. Michel Abreu opened the Buffalo ninth with a single but was erased when Chip Ambres grounded into a double play. Braves closer Luis Valdez got Cory Sullivan to pop up for the final out.
Buffalo took its lead with three runs in the top of the sixth when Broadway walked, Argenis Reyes singled and Jesus Feliciano tripled. The third run scored when Abreu was retired on a slow roller.
Barbaro Canizares doubled home two runs to get Gwinnett a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Buffalo got one run back in the fourth when Feliciano walked, took second on a wild pitch and scored as Gorecki misplayed Emil Brown’s single to center.
Tobi Stoner (1-0, 4.50 ERA) will make his second start for the Bisons against right-hander Todd Redmond (3-6, 5.17) of the Braves tonight (7 p. m., Radio 1520 AM). Stoner pitched into the seventh inning in his Triple-A debut, a 10-3 victory at Charlotte last Friday.
