Bisons absorb losses against Charlotte

SPECIAL TO THE NEWS

Story tools:

FORT MILL, S. C. — The Buffalo Bisons lost more than a baseball game on Monday afternoon. The roster took a hit as well.

On the field, a late Buffalo rally fell short in a 7-6 defeat in the series finale against Charlotte. The Herd salvaged a four-game split.

Off the field there were plenty of player moves.

Fernando Martinez was called back up to the New York Mets after just two days when Carlos Beltran went on the disabled list.

Bison closer Elmer Dessens (team-high 11 saves) and reliever Pat Misch were also called up.

Reliever Ken Takahashi and infielder Wilson Valdez were sent down from New York. Reliever Arturo Lopez, who was claimed off waivers last week, was activated.

Infielder/outfielders Wily Mo Pena and Javier Valentin and outfielder Bobby Kielty were all released from the Herd. Valentin and Kielty had been on DL. Kielty had not played since April.

Pena hit .276 and played in 41 games. He was second on the team in home runs (5) and RBIs (21).

Against Charlotte, Buffalo scored the final five runs in the game, and were in position to take the lead late, when Knights closer Jon Link struck out Michel Abreu with two runners on to end the game.

The Bisons scored two runs in the seventh, a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to nearly erase a 7-1 deficit. RBIs from Jesus Feliciano and Mike Lamb in the ninth brought Buffalo to within 7-6 before the team ran out of outs.

The Bisons fell behind early, thanks in large part to a three-run home run from Charlotte’s Brandon Allen in just his fourth Triple-A game. That came in part of a five-run fifth that chased Buffalo’s starter Brandon Knight (4-6).

Lamb extended his hit streak to nine games with two hits.

The Bisons begin a four-game series at Gwinnett tonight (7 p. m., Radio 1520 AM). The Bisons starter is to be announced. Misch was scheduled before his callup. Left-hander Jonny Venters (0-0, 8.10) will start for the Braves.
