Story tools:

Former Buffalo Bills quarterback Matt Kofler, who played for the team from 1982-84 and later for the Indianapolis Colts, died of an undisclosed illness in El Cajon, Calif. Dec. 19 at the age of 49.

Kofler had been the head coach at San Diego Mesa College for three seasons, but had to miss the final six games of the season due to poor health.

Kofler was a backup to Joe Ferguson during his time with the Bills, throwing for 440 yards in 1983 and 432 in 1984 with six touchdown passes and eight interceptions.
