SECOND QUARTER
Kicking calamities
So much for the Bills’ special teams advantage.
Three bad special teams plays foiled the Bills in the second quarter.
First Rian Lindell missed a 20-yard field-goal try after the Bills had marched 85 yards in 18 plays. The snap was high, and Brian Moorman may not have gotten the ball down perfectly, but the hold was not too bad. The kick bounced off the left upright, snapping Lindell’s streak of 53 straight successful kicks inside the 40.
The Bills stopped the 49ers on the ensuing drive, but then Roscoe Parrish made an awful decision by fielding a punt at the 1-yard line rather than letting it bounce in the end zone for a touchback. He was stopped at the 7, putting the offense in a hole.
The Bills were stopped in four plays, then Moorman shanked his punt. The Bills’ defense held firm to stop the Niners on the ensuing drive.
Key plays: Niners kicker Joe Nedney nailed a 50-yard field goal to give San Francisco a 10-0 lead.
Second-guess: The Bills wasted all three timeouts in the first half via one type of mix-up or another.
