Edwards leaves field with a quad injury

Buffalo Bills starting quarterback Trent Edwards left practice Tuesday night at St. John Fisher College with a deep quad contusion and didn’t return.

Bills coach Dick Jauron said Edwards will be re-evaluated today and didn’t know his status for the rest of the week, including the team’s third preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Edwards walked off the field with trainers showing no noticeable limp.

“Sometimes they come back quickly, sometimes they don’t,” Jauron said. “Sometimes it turns into a deep bleeding thing and we’re hoping it’s not that.”

The second-year quarterback out of Stanford suffered the injury 50 minutes into the two-hour session when he collided with running back Marshawn Lynch during 11-on-11 drills, the first play after the team removed their pads for the remainder of practice. Initially, it appeared the two players banged knees and Lynch missed a few reps because of a sore knee, but returned to practice and ran well.

“It’s the nature of life, things happen,” Jauron said. “There’s nothing guaranteed; you just go out and practice and hope everything comes out all right. Hopefully, he’ll be fine.”

Corto shifts to linebacker

Orchard Park native Jon Corto is getting work at weakside linebacker with the second unit. He played linebacker at Division III Sacred Heart before being transitioned to safety.

Corto, a 2007 practice squad member, played well last Thursday against Pittsburgh, recording one tackle for a loss. He’s starting to get more reps than Blake Costanzo and Marcus Buggs.

The Bills are hoping Corto can make the same transition as former Bill Coy Wire, who came to Buffalo as a safety but was moved to linebacker (his position at Stanford) last season.

“Size-wise we thought he fit the safety position more and just all loved his temperament since we’ve been introduced to him,” Jauron said of the former rookie free agent. “[Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell] probably wanted to move him earlier. When we got all the injuries we then said we’ve got to move him.

“There’s a guy that’s played the position, we’re really low on linebackers going into that game, and

Perry talked to Jon and Jon was all for it. He just wants to play. He

just wants a chance to play and he really did a good job. So it worked out and we’ll see where it goes.”

Safety Donte Whitner

was not in camp for the

third consecutive day to deal with a personal issue. ... Receiver Roscoe Parish (knee) sat out the night session, as did rookie receiver James Hardy (hamstring). Neither injury is considered serious and Jauron hopes they return to practice by Thursday or Friday. Rookie cornerback Kennard Cox, who was limited in practice the last few days with a sore ankle, played throughout Tuesday’s practice, while offensive tackle Matt Murphy attended practice wearing a sling on his injured left shoulder. Linebacker John DiGiorgio missed practice with a calf injury that Jauron said has been bothering him for a while.
