The billboard: A daily dose from Bills training camp
Edwards a big fan of Lowrie
While quarterback Trent Edwards focuses his attention on getting ready for the upcoming season, he’s got one eye on the progress of Boston Red Sox rookie shortstop Jed Lowrie. The two have known each other since their sophomore year at Stanford
and have been good friends ever since.
Lowrie is trying to stick with the Red Sox after being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on July 13. As Edwards is trying to fulfill his potential as an NFL quarterback, he is rooting for his buddy to have equal success in the major leagues.
“I have a lot of respect for Jed, he carries himself like a professional and you watch him out there and it seems like he belongs out there,” Edwards said. “I have been telling him all along that he is playing the position like he has been there before, which is what you need to do and that is kind of my experience from last year. I need to carry myself like I have been there before, even if I am not confident in myself or I haven’t been there before I need to be able to hold myself in that regard.”
Roster moves
With backup defensive end Copeland Bryan nusing an injured hamstring, the Bills signed free agent defensive end Derrick Jones on Thursday. Jones was released two months ago by Atlanta, where he appeared in one game as a rookie last season. He was originally signed by Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent.
To open a roster spot for Jones, the Bills placed rookie linebacker Alvin Bowen on the injured reserve list. The fifth-round draft pick is scheduled to have surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.
Everett at Glen
Former Bills tight end Kevin Everett will be the grand marshal for Saturday’s Zippo 200 NASCAR Nationwide Series race at Watkins Glen International. Everett, who suffered a career-ending spinal cord injury against the Denver Broncos in last year’s opener, will also be available to sign his book, “Standing Tall, the Kevin Everett Story.” The race begins at 3 p. m. and will be televised live on Ch. 7.

There is no practice today. The team is having a brief walkthrough before flying to Washington for Saturday’s preseason opener. There are only two open practices next week — Monday from 7 to 9:05 p. m. and Tuesday from 1 to 3 p. m. — due to next Thursday’s preseason game in Toronto. Quote of the Day
“I know the fans are devastated. They are very loyal fans and they are true to the people who play there. I know that they are feeling it a little bit.” — Bills receiver and University of Wisconsin grad Lee Evans on Brett Favre leaving the Green Bay Packers and its emotional impact on Wisconsin.
