McGee ready to return kickoffs again this season

Story tools:

Cornerback Terrence McGee says he has no problem handling the full-time kickoff return role if the Buffalo Bills need him to do so this season.

The drafting of cornerback Leodis McKelvin raises a question of how the Bills will divide kickoff return duties. McKelvin was the best return man available in the draft. He averaged 23.7 yards per kickoff return in his college career and scored seven touchdowns on punt returns.

The Bills could decide to lessen McGee’s workload this year on kickoff returns by spelling him with McKelvin or Roscoe Parrish.

“I’m like anybody back there,” McGee said. “I’ll say I want to get all of them. I’m sure he’d say he’ll want to get all of them. It may come to a point where I need a blow at times. But we’re all competitors out there, and we all want the ball in our hands.”

McGee is the best kickoff return man in Bills history and one of the best in the NFL. He has five career kickoff returns for TDs. He has averaged 49 returns a season the last four years. McGee, who still is only 27, said he will do whatever the team wants but that decreasing wear and tear on his body is not a concern.

“I’m not worried about that,” he said with a laugh. “When I start talking about wear and tear then that’s old age, and next year you might see another first round cornerback drafted.”

Fred Jackson continues to look good running and catching passes during the team’s spring practices. The Bills held their ninth voluntary practice Wednesday. Jason Peters, J. P. Losman, Aaron Schobel and Mike Viti were the only players not in attendance. . . . The Bills will host a blood drive with the American Red Cross from 11 a. m. to 7 p. m. Friday in the Paul Maguire Club at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
