New York Jets: Offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer said he wants to remain in New York despite rumors that the Buffalo Bills are interested in talking to him about their vacant head coaching position. “For the first time in a real long time, I’m really happy. I love it here, I love working with Coach [Rex] Ryan and I hope I’m here for a long time,” he said.
New England Patriots: Wes Welker’s season officially ended Wednesday when the Patriots placed the NFL’s leading receiver on injured reserve. Welker was running after making his NFL-best 123rd catch Sunday when his left leg buckled as he planted it to make a cut. Also, quarterback Tom Brady’s strong return from a left knee injury earned him the Associated Press 2009 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award.
Kansas City Chiefs: All signs are pointing toward former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis becoming offensive coordinator for the Chiefs. Coach Todd Haley, an old friend of Weis, said Wednesday that he would be a “good fit” calling plays for Kansas City, and Weis later told the Associated Press “there is action going on” between him and the Chiefs.
National Conference
Arizona Cardinals: Three-time Pro Bowl receiver Anquan Boldin did not practice because of a sprained left ankle and cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, a Pro Bowler in his second season, was out with a bruised left kneecap. Defensive end Calais Campbell practiced on a limited basis after breaking his left thumb. All three injuries occurred in last Sunday’s 33-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers, the team the Cardinals host in a wild-card playoff game Sunday.
New York Giants: Coach Tom Coughlin fired defensive line coach Mike Waufle on Wednesday afternoon, two days after co-owner John Mara said that the play of the defensive line was one of the team’s biggest disappointments in an 8-8 season. Coughlin also fired rookie defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan on Monday. Former Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator and interim head coach Perry Fewell will interview for Sheridan’s job today.
Washington Redskins: Mike Shanahan made his formal debut as coach and executive vice president. “I’ve got very high standards, just like everybody in this organization,” Shanahan said. “I can’t tell you how long it’s going to take. But I can guarantee you: We’ll get better every day and hopefully it won’t take long to get back to where this organization has been.”
