The Golden Griffins face Detroit at 7 p.m. at the Koessler Center with hopes of posting a winning season for the first time since 2008-09, when they went 24-9.
Detroit has five returnees from last year’s squad that lost in the Horizon League semifinals but followed that by winning the Women’s Basketball Invitational tournament.
Canisius played well defensively last year, holding foes to 36.3 percent shooting, which ranked second in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. But it still finished 12-19.
Niagara raises the curtain at the Taps Gallagher Center at 7 p.m. when it squares off against Lehigh, which returns four starters and nine letter winners from last year’s 14-16 squad.
Junior Meghan McGuinness averaged 9.6 points for Niagara last year during a 15-16 season.
The University at Buffalo women take the court first when they open at Binghamton (5:30 pm., Radio 1270). Meanwhile, St. Bonaventure (10-19 last year) hits Tobacco Road to face North Carolina State – coming off a WNIT appearance and a 17-17 mark.
