Torbor has outside shot at linebacker job
Updated: August 21, 2010, 10:17 AM
Linebacker Reggie Torbor came out of college known as a pass-rush specialist. It hasn't worked out that way after six years in the NFL.
Yet Torbor thinks he might be able to surprise people if he gets a chance to get after the
quarterback with his new team — the Buffalo Bills.
"I think I have a lot left to show still," Torbor said Tuesday after his first Bills
practice. "That's always something to keep the edge as you go on in your career. So you kind
of come to work with a little chip on your shoulder, something to prove."
Torbor, 29, looks like a solid depth pick-up for the Bills, who inked him to a two-year
contract after he was released by Miami on May 27. Can he be any more than that?
He was a backup outside linebacker most of his first four years with the New York Giants
but started the last nine games of his Giants career, including the Super Bowl upset of New
England. He was backup inside linebacker the past two years with Miami.
The Bills like the fact he can play inside and outside. They have three proven NFL players
inside in Paul Posluszny, Kawika Mitchell and Andra Davis. They could use more insurance
outside.
"Right now I'm playing outside," Torbor said. "I understand that can change on a need basis.
I take that as a positive thing. ... I haven't played outside since I was with New York. So
it's kind of a process getting back into it today and relearning out there. But it's fun."
Torbor had 10.5 sacks as a senior at Auburn and jokes, "I think they shorted me a couple."
However, he played on one of the great sacking teams of the decade in New York and didn't
break into the pass-rushing rotation much. He had 18 starts and five sacks over four years.
With Miami, another team deep in pass rushers, he failed to beat out Channing Crowder and Akin
Ayodele inside, and inside linebackers don't rack up many sacks, anyway.
"It's me; you don't look around and say it was the coach's fault or somebody else's fault,"
Torbor said of his Miami tenure. "I could sit here and talk about this and that. It'd just
start something. It's useless. Through my career and what I've experienced over stuff like
that, it never ends up good. I have a job. I have a place where I'm wanted. I have good
teammates, a good coaching staff. The rest will take care of itself."
Torbor thinks he can bring savvy to the Bills' defense.
"People say I'm old; I don't get that," he said. "I'm 29. I'm healthy. I've learned from
some of the best pass rushers in history. My last year [in New York] we set a record for most
sacks. You don't look at that as a down thing. I've learned some things. I'm going to have an
opportunity."
. . .
The Bills signed rookie offensive tackle Kyle Calloway, their second of two seventh-round
draft picks. Calloway, 6-6 and 323, started 37 of 39 games at Iowa and was second-team All-Big
Ten in 2008 and 2009. ... Running back Marshawn Lynch remained absent from the voluntary
practices. ... Cornerback Stephan Virgil, an undrafted rookie out of Virginia Tech, was
waived. ... Tight end Derek Schouman returned to full team drills for the first time. He
missed most of last season with a knee injury.
