Broadway, Bisons fall to Chiefs
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:33 AM
SYRACUSE — So far, August has been a forgettable month for Buffalo Bisons pitcher Lance
Broadway.
The right-hander suffered his third loss in four August starts and saw his ERA for the
month soar to 10.80 in the Herd's 7-3 loss to the Syracuse Chiefs on Wednesday night at
Alliance Bank Stadium. Box score
Broadway (4-9, 6.39 ERA) took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning, but got into trouble
right away when veteran Daryle Ward led off the inning with a home run. Justin Maxwell
followed with a double. Broadway got the next two outs, but walked pinch-hitter Brad Eldred.
A single by Norris Hopper drove in the tying run and ended Broadway's night. Reliever Jon
Switzer came on and was greeted by a two-run triple by Pete Orr to put the Chiefs in front to
stay.
That sealed Buffalo's 10th loss in 12 games against Syracuse this season. The Bisons are
2-6 on the road against the Chiefs.
Syracuse tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth on a two-run single by Gustavo Molina.
A throwing error by Switzer after fielding a bunt helped the Chiefs.
Chip Ambres reached on an error and scored on another miscue to give the Bisons a 1-0 lead
in the second inning against Syracuse starter Ross Detwiler (2-2). In the third Argenis Reyes
singled and scored on a fly-ball triple by Nick Evans. The Bisons got another run in the
fourth when Jason Dubois walked and came all the way around on a double by Javier Castillo.
The Herd managed only two hits after that, however, against Detwiler and relievers Zack
Segovia and Yunior Novoa.
Evans had a fifth-inning single to raise his average to .292 in 19 August games. Twelve of
his 21 hits in the month have been for extra bases.
Ambres' 10-game hit streak was stopped at 10 games as he went 0 for 4.
The Bisons will start a pair of left-handers, Pat Misch (1-1, 4.64) and Ken Takahashi (0-3,
2.77), today in a doubleheader against the Chiefs at Coca-Cola Field (1:05 p.m., TWC13, Radio
1520 AM).
The teams will play another twin bill on Friday night (6:05 p.m.). Right-hander Tobi Stoner
(4-7, 4.58) is scheduled to start Friday's opener for Buffalo against right-hander Andrew Kown
(4-1, 4.19).
