The billboard: A daily dose from training camp

The depth chart
All eyes were on the quarterback, but numerous other spots are up for grabs this training camp. At No. 2 receiver, Steve Johnson was with the first unit, ahead of James Hardy. Those two are the top contenders to start. At weakside outside linebacker, veteran Reggie Torbor started, and Aaron Maybin was with the second team. Torbor was signed by the Bills on June 5 after being cut by Miami. At cornerback, veteran Drayton Florence, who had an outstanding year last season, was ahead of Leodis McKelvin. McKelvin is expected to win that job, but Florence is going to make him work for it. At inside linebacker, both Andra Davis and Kawika Mitchell were starting because Paul Posluszny is out for a couple of weeks with a groin injury. Davis and Mitchell will battle to start next to Poz. At left tackle, Demetrius Bell did position drills but no contact work, as scheduled, coach Chan Gailey said. Jamon Meredith took Bell's spot with the starters.
T.O. endorsement
Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick played two seasons with Cincinnati and gave a good recommendation of Terrell Owens to Bengals QB Carson Palmer before that team signed Owens this week. Fitzpatrick would not say if he talked to anyone else from the Bengals about T.O.
"I really enjoyed playing with him last year," Fitzpatrick said. "I know it was not the season he had hoped for or everybody had expected. He had a great attitude the whole year, and when we did connect he had some big [plays]. He can still certainly take the top off the defense. That was the main thing I stressed, the guy can still run and get open."
Quick hits
The Bills practiced in full pads, a stark departure from the Dick Jauron era, in which they went at least two practice days without pads before breaking out the hits. They had just 15 minutes of 11-on-11 drills. Running back Marshawn Lynch looked quick hitting the hole. There weren't a lot of big pass plays. Rookie Marcus Easley made a good catch deep down the sideline from Fitzpatrick versus tight coverage from Terrence McGee in seven-on-seven work. ... The crowd at St. John Fisher was small, a couple hundred. ... Chris Kelsay tweaked his right shoulder and may be out a couple of days.
Directions
From Buffalo take the Thruway to Exit 47. Take Route 490 East for 25 miles to Exit 25 (Fairport Road -- 31F). Turn right or left and follow signs to fan parking. Shuttle buses take fans from the nearby lots to the practice fields. The lots are at Sutherland High School (55 Sutherland St.) and Mendon High School (472 Mendon Road), both near St. John Fisher.
Schedule
The open practice Friday is from 7 to 9 p.m., but all the tickets for the session already have been distributed. Tickets only are required for night sessions. The team practices from 3 to 5:30 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, it's 7 to 9 p.m. Check www.ticketmaster.com for night tickets.
Quote of the Day
"Chan Gailey and his staff, I believe, bring more of a disciplinary feel to not just the meeting rooms but the practice field and the entire atmosphere around the organization."
-- Defensive end Chris Kelsay
