Kane apologizes for incident with cabbie
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:33 AM
Hockey star and South Buffalo native Patrick Kane today apologized to his family, the city
of Buffalo, the Chicago Blackhawks and their fans during a very brief statement about the
incident that led to his arrest eight days ago.
In a statement that lasted just under one minute, Kane, 20, said he knows everyone wants to
talk about what happened early on the morning of Aug. 9, but he said he could not discuss any
specifics about the pending legal case.
"Because I've put myself in being in the wrong position in the wrong time, I've caused a
lot of pain for my family, my hometown of Buffalo, the city of Chicago, the Chicago Blackhawks
and obviously the great fans we have here in Chicago," he said. "And for that part, I
sincerely apologize. Now it's time for me to move forward."
The young superstar opened his quick statement by saying he knows he's been very lucky to
achieve every kid's dream of playing in the National Hockey League.
Kane made the statement at the beginning of a press conference held in conjunction with
U.S. Olympic hockey's orientation camp being held just outside of Chicago.
He and his cousin, James M. Kane, 21, were accused of attacking taxicab driver Jan Radecki,
62, in his cab early on the morning of Aug. 9 near Canisius College during a dispute over
change for their fare.
Radecki told police that the Kanes became upset when he told them he didn't have the coins
to give them 20 cents in change.
Both Kanes face charges of felony second-degree robbery, misdemeanor criminal mischief and
theft of services, a violation.
An Erie County grand jury last Thursday completed its investigation into the case. Results
of that grand jury vote are expected to be made public Thursday.
