Retirement? Bills' Schobel says not so fast
Spiller, Troup unsigned on eve of camp
Updated: July 28, 2010, 8:14 PM
The Buffalo Bills' top two draft picks remained unsigned, and veteran defensive end Aaron Schobel said he's giving stronger consideration to coming back for another season as the team prepared to open training camp.
First-round draft pick C.J. Spiller is unlikely to report to St. John Fisher College in suburban Rochester today, and Schobel definitely won't be there.
However, Schobel said from his home in Texas he might not be ready to call it quits.
"I'm leaning more toward playing than I was a month ago," Schobel told The News on Tuesday evening. "I don't know what the Bills would do or how much time they would give me [to make a decision], but I'm thinking about it."
On June 10, Schobel said he was probably done, saying, "At this point, I don't think that I'm going to play."
But the nine-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowler also refused to close the door on returning. He's still not sure what he plans to do.
"I'm going to try to make a decision in the next 10 days," Schobel said Tuesday evening. "But that doesn't mean I'm going to report in 10 days."
Schobel said he has been staying in good enough shape to give himself the chance to come back for a 10th season should he try to do so.
"I've been working out some so that I can make a realistic decision," he said.
On the contract front, parameters for a deal for Bills second-round pick Torell Troup got clearer in the past two days because close to half the league's draftees in the second round have signed.
It looks like Spiller will be among a large group of top NFL signees who don't take the field for their first training camp practice. Only one of 32 first-round picks in the league had signed by Tuesday night.
Eleven NFL teams will have opened training camp by today. Bills rookies and veterans will start moving into their dormitory rooms in Pittsford today. Bills camp opens on Thursday, along with camps for six other NFL teams. By Friday 29 of the 32 teams will be in camp.
The Bills' first practice is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday. It is open to the public. Buffalo has two practices scheduled for Friday. The first is 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., and it is not open to the public. The second practice, from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, is open, but all of the free tickets required to attend that session have been distributed.
Troup, a big defensive tackle from Central Florida, was the 41st overall pick this year. The picks at Nos. 38, 39 and 42 all were under contract as of Tuesday night. No. 39, Tampa's Arrelious Benn, got a four-year deal worth a reported $4.8 million and at least $2.85 million guaranteed. New England's Rob Gronkowski (Williamsville North), No. 42, got four years and a reported $4.44 million with $2.59 million guaranteed.
The signing of many first-round picks typically goes down to the last minute before camp opens in the NFL.
Dallas' Dez Bryant, the 24th overall pick, was the only first-round signee as of Tuesday evening.
The Bills had an uncharacteristically difficult time signing last year's top pick, Aaron Maybin. He missed 27 days of camp before agreeing to a deal last Aug. 21. Maybin was the third-last of the 32 first-round picks to report to camp last summer.
In 2008, Buffalo's top pick, cornerback Leodis McKelvin, signed on July 26 and did not miss a full-contact practice at camp. Running back Marshawn Lynch, the top pick in 2007, missed just two practices. Safety Donte Whitner, the top pick in 2006, had an eight-day holdout and missed 14 camp workouts.
Meanwhile, the Bills are one of several teams taking a closer look at 31-year-old free agent guard Chester Pitts, who started seven years with Houston. He visited Buffalo on Monday, and would represent more veteran insurance on the interior of the line. Pitts missed most of last season with a knee injury that required microfracture surgery to repair cartilage damage in the knee. But he is healthy enough to get checked out by prospective teams. Pitts reportedly is scheduled to visit with Pittsburgh, Seattle and Denver.
