Sabres' Roy gets Olympic tryout
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:22 AM
Derek Roy is making plans to camp in Calgary this summer, while the Buffalo Sabres' top prospects will soon be bunking near Niagara Falls.
Roy, the Sabres' highest-Scoring player over the past two seasons, has been invited to Hockey Canada's Olympic orientation camp. The 46-
player gathering will be held Aug. 24-27 in Calgary and will help determine which 23 players skate for Canada in the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Although Roy has recorded 60 goals and 151 points over the past two seasons and has represented Canada three times in international competition, he's a long shot to make the team. The Canadians are stacked at forward, with Sidney Crosby, Jarome Iginla, Vincent Lecavalier, Joe Thornton and Eric Staal heading the 25 front men attending the camp.
Former Sabres defenseman Brian Campbell was not invited to Calgary. Executive Director Steve Yzerman said Thursday that players not attending the camp can still be named to the team in December. However, the last two Olympic squads were picked from players at the orientation.
The Sabres' prospects are years away from Olympic consideration, but they'll be camping at Niagara University next week. The Sabres' annual rookie camp will be held Monday through Friday at Dwyer Arena.
The roster includes 41 players, including Nathan Gerbe, Tim Kennedy, Chris Butler, Tyler Myers, Mike Weber and recent draft picks Zack Kassian and Marcus Foligno.
There will be on-ice sessions open to the public from 3-6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.
