The billboard: A daily dose from camp - NFL baptism
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:32 AM
PITTSFORD — Eric Wood and Andy Levitre couldn't help being a little nervous about their first start in the
NFL, even if it was a preseason game. But both felt good about their pro debuts in the Hall of
Fame Game on Sunday.
Wood and Levitre started at right and left guard, respectively, and played into the second half.
"It took me a series or two to get my feet wet and really get the flow of the game," Wood
said. "Ultimately, I can't have that happen. I have to be into it right away. But that's what
preseason is for. I knew it wasn't going to be easy and it wasn't. Now I've just got to learn
from it and keep getting better from here."
Levitre got pushed into the backfield, preventing quarterback Trent Edwards from stepping
into a throw that sailed on him and was intercepted by Tennessee safety Michael Griffin on the
first drive. But other than that, Levitre played pretty well. In fact, offensive line coach
Sean Kugler said Levitre had one of the highest grades among the offensive linemen in the
game.
"There is going to be an adjustment period and some ups and downs," Levitre said. "I know
it's not going to happen for me overnight, but I feel like I'm making progress."
Roster moves, again
Four days after being released by the Bills, safety Antwain Spann was back on the field
Tuesday after re-signing with the team.
Spann spent the last three seasons with the New England Patriots and appeared in 19 games.
He entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the New York Giants.
The Bills also signed offensive lineman Christian Gaddis, who was with the team in training
camp last year. Spann and Gaddis filled roster vacancies by backup defensive end Jermaine
McGhee and reserve center Marvin Philip being put on the waived/injured list.
McGhee tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee during
Sunday's game, according to his agent. Philip suffered what appeared to be a serious right
knee injury in practice last Friday.
If both players clear waivers they revert back to the Bills, who would likely place them on
injured reserve.
Sideline views
Right tackle Brad Butler was back in the lineup Tuesday after missing the last seven days
with a lower back injury.
Rookie outside linebacker Ashlee Palmer did not practice due to
a several ankle sprain in last Sunday's game.
Cornerback Ashton Youboty was held out with a lingering groin injury.
Wide receiver Steve Johnson re-aggravated a rib cartilage injury diving for a pass. The injury kept Johnson out a week, but Jauron said it does not appear to be as serious this time.
Wide receiver Roscoe Parrish made a great over-the-shoulder catch on a deep ball from quarterback Gibran Hamdan.
Cornerback Leodis McKelvin was beat on a deep pass to wide receiver Lee Evans, but the ball hung in the air long
enough for McKelvin to recover and knock the ball away.
Defensive end Chris Ellis beat left tackle Langston Walker for a couple of "touch sacks'' during a two-minute drill.
