Bills' Owens day to day with sprained toe
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:32 AM
PITTSFORD — Terrell Owens was held out of his first practice with the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday. Will his preseason home debut be put on hold, too?
Owens did not attend the Tuesday night practice because of a sprained toe, according to
head coach Dick Jauron.
Jauron said it is too early to tell if Owens will play in Saturday's game against the
Chicago Bears at Ralph Wilson Stadium.
For now, Jauron indicated that Owens is listed as "day to day."
Owens, who also missed the morning walkthrough, was injured during the Hall of Fame game
against the Tennessee Titans last Sunday. When and how it happened is unknown.
"I think he would probably tell you that he's not certain when he did it," Jauron said.
Owens caught two passes for 27 yards in the game, but did not show any signs of injury
afterwards. Neither he nor Jauron mentioned the injury during their postgame news conferences.
The injury was first revealed by Owens on his Twitter page. While on the bus headed to the
airport Sunday night, he tweeted, "Damn, my toe is aching!"
The Bills will likely be very cautious with Owens because bringing him back too soon could
make the injury worse. A sprained toe does not require surgery, but rehabilitation calls for
rest, ice treatments, elevation and sometimes anti-inflammatory medication.
In some cases, the pain and swelling can disappear and a full range of motion can return
within a couple of days. A more serious sprain can last one to two weeks. It is not certain if
Owens has turf toe, which could take several weeks to heal.
"We miss him a lot, we need him back here when he's healthy," quarterback Trent Edwards
said.
In other Bills news, the team re-signed safety Antwain Spann less than one week after
releasing him. The Bills had an open roster spot because defensive end Jermaine McGhee and
center Marvin Philip were placed on the waiver-injured list.
McGhee tore the anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his right knee during
Sunday's game. Phillip hurt his right knee during practice last week.
