Mike Grier is back in a Buffalo Sabres uniform after spending the last three seasons with the San Jose Sharks.

The Sabres announced on Monday they agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the unrestricted free agent. The terms were not disclosed. Grier was a popular, hard-nosed player during his first stint with the Sabres from 2004 to '06.

Signing the 6-foot-1, 225-pound forward is expected to help the Sabres, who are not deep on the right side and could use a power forward to work with some of the smaller players.

Grier first came to Buffalo after being acquired in a trade from Washington on March 9, 2004 in exchange for Jakub Klepis.

The veteran is best remembered for his contributions to the Sabres during their run to the 2006 Eastern Conference Finals. He had 23 points, including four game-winning goals, in 81 regular season games in 2005-06 and eight points in 18 games during the postseason run.

Grier was then signed to a free agent deal by San Jose, where he recorded 16 goals, including three short-handed, in his first season with the Sharks.

He scored nine and 10 goals in his next two seasons with the Sharks.

Grier is coming off a season in which he had 23 points in 62 games for San Jose. He was third on the Sharks in hits with 147, and was tied for 12th in the NHL with four short-handed points. Grier missed 20 games with a knee injury last season, after averaging 77 games played

during his first 11 NHL seasons.
