PITTSFORD — The Bills have run some plays out of the Wildcat formation with Roscoe

Parrish at quarterback, but it was primarily for the benefit of the defense because the team

faces the Miami Dolphins, who used the Wildcat to great success last season.

Offensive coordinator Turk Schonert is not sure if he would make it a part of his system,

but said Parrish would make be an ideal Wildcat quarterback.

"Roscoe would add a dimension of quickness and speed that would put a lot of pressure on

defenses," Schonert said.

Parrish, an all-star high school quarterback in Miami, Fla., wouldn't mind seeing it added

to the offensive package.

"I'd love it," he said. "I can run obviously, but I can pass it, too. I think I would be

real good at it. But that's not my decision. We'll see."

Injury report

Third-string center Marvin Phillip had to be helped to the sideline with a right knee

injury after a team drill. He was able to leave the practice field on his own after spending

several minutes on his back while the team's training staff examined him. Defensive tackle

Spencer Johnson hurt his right leg during a pile-up, but appeared to be OK. Defensive tackle

John McCargo got kicked in his right calf and was held out the rest of practice. Coach Dick

Jauron did not have an update after practice so the players' availability for Sunday's

preseason opener is uncertain.

Bills sign another D-lineman

The Bills signed rookie free agent defensive end Ataefiok Etukeren (pronounced A-tay-fee-ok

ETU-keer-en). He played last year at Georgetown, where he was a second-team All-Patriot League

performer with 61 tackles (including 15 tackles for loss) and 5 sacks in 10 games. He is the

third defensive lineman signed in the past week. To make room for Etukeren, the Bills released

safety Antwain Spann, who was just picked up last week.

Sideline views

An estimated crowd of close to 3,000 watched the Bills go through a spirited workout in

pads. ... The defense got the upper hand in seven-on-seven drills as cornerbacks Terrence

McGee, Leodis McKelvin and rookie Ellis Lankster made interceptions. Wide receiver Shaine

Smith caught a nice long throw from quarterback Gibran Hamdan in team work. ... The defense

got physical in a team session as linebacker Jon Corto knocked down fullback Corey McIntyre

with a shot in the back on a pass completion and rookie cornerback Cary Harris separated Smith

from the ball with a jarring blow. ... Wide receiver Stevie Johnson practiced fully,

improving his chances to play on Sunday. ... Cornerback Ashton Youboty was held out of

practice with a groin injury. He'll be re-evaluated before the game.

T.O. Today

He's a big, physical receiver with big-play ability. No, we're not talking about Terrell

Owens. We're talking about his cousin.

Steven Black is an undrafted rookie wide receiver from Memphis trying to make the

Pittsburgh Steelers' roster. The 6-foot-3, 213-pound Black is big like Owens and they have

similar facial features. But does Black inherit some of his cousin's talent?

"Yeah," Owens answered with a big grin after Friday's practice. "He's got my bloodlines, so

I'm pretty sure [he'll be good]."
