Bills set to go camping
Updated: August 21, 2010, 8:25 AM
The Buffalo Bills will celebrate their 10th anniversary in their Rochester-area home away
from home starting Saturday.
They are expected to get as big a greeting as ever over their three-week stay at St. John
Fisher College due to the presence of marquee star receiver Terrell Owens.
Strong crowds have been the norm on the college campus just south of Rochester since the
Bills first made it their summer home in 2000. That was a big reason the team relocated from
Fredonia, where they spent the previous 19 training camps. Monroe County has a population of
about 733,000, while rural Chautauqua County has a population of about 133,000.
The Bills have successfully promoted their team to their big market to the east.
The Rochester area accounts for about 25 percent to 30 percent of sales of club seats and
suites at Ralph Wilson Stadium. In addition, at any given game, 15 percent to 18 percent of
the fans in the stands are from Monroe County. That doesn't include the counties to the
immediate west and south of Monroe.
There has been a trend among NFL teams to shift training camps back to the in-season
headquarters. About a dozen NFL teams "stay home" for camp. That's not a consideration for the
Bills, who have a long-term agreement with the college. Russ Brandon, Bills chief operating
officer and general manager, is an alumnus of St. John Fisher.
"It's as good of a training facility as I've ever been around as a player and a coach,"
said Bills coach Dick Jauron. "The people are unbelievable to us in terms of getting the
facility ready for us."
"I like the fact that it's far enough away from Buffalo that it is a little secluded a bit,
but close enough that we can get back and forth and people can get back and forth and watch
us," Jauron said.
The Bills open camp with two practices both Saturday and Sunday. The times are 8:30 to
10:25 a.m. and 2:15 to 4:10 p.m. both days. Those are the only two-a-day full practices
scheduled. (The Bills almost always have a walk-through session on their other practice days,
although those are closed to the public.)
The Bills will practice a total of 20 days at camp. Just as in the previous two years,
there are seven night sessions, for which a free ticket is required. The first is Tuesday from
7:10 to 9:10 p.m. The night-session tickets can be acquired at Ticketmaster's retail locations
and Web site.
Complimentary tickets also are required for the first two days of practices. A limited
number of tickets still are available at Rochester-area Verizon Wireless stores.
