Bills notebook: Draft comes and goes, but Lynch stays
Updated: August 21, 2010, 10:03 AM
Running back Marshawn Lynch is still a Buffalo Bill, and it doesn't look like that's going
to change any time soon.
According to several reports, the Seattle Seahawks had discussions about acquiring Lynch.
But the Seahawks got the big, physical running back they wanted by acquiring LenDale White in
a trade with the Tennessee Titans on Saturday. They also added Leon Washington from the New
York Jets.
There also were reports that the Green Bay Packers might have some interest in Lynch, but
that may have changed after they drafted the University at Buffalo's James Starks in the sixth
round.
Bills General Manager Buddy Nix has been adamant that the team has no plans to trade Lynch,
even though he's expendable after drafting Clemson's C.J. Spiller in the first round on
Thursday.
Nix declined to answer questions about whether he fielded calls about Lynch.
"You know I wouldn't discuss that," he said during his post-draft news conference Saturday.
"I've said time and time again, he's ours, he's here and we'd like for him to be here."
. . .
The Bills are big on small-school talent. That was apparent with their two sixth-round
picks as they took Arthur Moats of James Madison and Danny Batten of South Dakota State. Both
players played defensive end in college, but project as linebackers in the Bills' 3-4. The
Division I-AA prospects offer good pass-rushing ability.
Moats was the Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year as a senior after
posting 11 sacks and 23.5 tackles for losses. He had 29 career sacks and started 29 of 49
games. At 6-foot-2, Moats lacks ideal height, but the Bills see him as a developmental
prospect that may be able to play inside linebacker eventually.
Batten had 23 career sacks and 55 tackles for losses while starting 45 of 46 games. He's
viewed as an outside linebacker in the Bills' 3-4 scheme.
The NFL is certainly a step up in competition, but that doesn't concern Nix.
"To be honest with you, you weigh in the competition, obviously," he said. "But we still
don't think much about what school they come from. I mean, these guys have size, they can run
and they play hard, wherever they're from."
. . .
The Bills spent several hours after the draft Saturday night and again today working the
phones to add undrafted free agents to the roster. Nix believes there are some players out
there that will make it in the NFL.
"Most of the guys we're getting after the draft, we had draftable grades on," he said.
"There are a lot of good players out there. It's a matter of identifying them and spending a
little money to get them."
