Bills double up on strength coaches
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:33 AM
The Buffalo Bills hired two men familiar to Chan Gailey on Tuesday to serve as the team's
strength and conditioning coaches.
They are Eric Ciano and John Gamble. Ciano spent the past five years as the strength and
conditioning coach at Georgia Tech. He worked with Bills head coach Gailey for three of those
seasons. Before that he spent three years as associate strength and conditioning coach at the
University of Tennessee.
Gamble spent the last 16 years with the Miami Dolphins. The first 12 of those was as
strength and conditioning coach. The last four were spent as director of player development,
in which he assisted players' needs off the field. Gamble was hired as a strength coach in
Miami by Don Shula. He was the No. 1-ranked powerlifter in the world in the 275-pound class
from 1981 to 1983. He was inducted into the U.S. Weightlifting Hall of Fame in 1999.
The two men replace John Allaire, who was Bills chief strength coach the past four years.
"We decided to bring in two head strength and conditioning coaches to let them specialize
in the specific areas each coach works in, and we feel like we've hired two unbelievable
people to run that department for us," Gailey said. "The combination of these two guys is
going to pay real dividends for our team."
The team will be looking for better luck on the injury front under Gailey. The Bills led
the NFL in players on injured reserve in both 2007 (17) and 2009 (20).
Gamble and Gailey worked together in 2000 and 2001 while Gailey was Miami's offensive
coordinator. In 1998, Gamble was named Coach of the Year by the Professional Strength Coaches
Society. He shifted to the player development role in the second and final year of Nick
Saban's tenure in Miami, 2006.
"John Gamble has a wealth of experience at the NFL level," Gailey said. "He's a great leader
of men as well as a great strength and conditioning coach. He gives us so much knowledge and
background in gaining strength, mass and power and that's what we're really looking forward to
having him bring to our program."
Prior to joining the Dolphins, Gamble served as the head strength and conditioning coach at
the University of Virginia from 1984-93. He was named 1985 Strength Coach of the Year by the
National Strength and Conditioning Association.
This will be Ciano's first job in the NFL. He was strength and conditioning coach at
Louisiana Tech from 2000 to 2002.
"Eric Ciano came through the University of Tennessee system, which is renowned for
producing great coaches in the strength and conditioning area," Gailey said. "He was our
strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Tech and did an unbelievable job in getting our
young men bigger, stronger, quicker and faster through the years."
