Bandits notebook: Doyle joins Tavares in 1,000-point club
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:33 AM
The 1,000-point club of the National Lacrosse League became just a bit less exclusive on
Saturday night.
Colin Doyle of the Toronto Rock went flying by that milestone during his team's 14-10
victory over the Buffalo Bandits in HSBC Arena. He joined two of the league's all-time greats
at 1,000 points or better — John Tavares of the Bandits at 1,420, and Gary Gait of the
Rochester Knighthawks at 1,139.
"It's pretty special to join company like that," Doyle said after the game. "I guess it
says something about how long and how hard you've played in this league.
"I'm proud of it. I've always said I don't play for those kinds of things, but it's nice to
have goals and accomplishments. To be with John and Gary is obviously a pretty big honor."
Doyle spent nine seasons in southern Ontario (one in Hamilton, eight in Toronto) before
moving to San Jose for three years. He returned to the Rock in the offseason.
Doyle finished with a goal and four assists. The milestone came early in the second
quarter, when the forward hit Josh Wasson with a nice pass across the slot that led to a goal.
"When I started playing in the pros, Colin and I played our first year together," Bandits
forward Mike Accursi said. "No doubt about it — Colin the guy is a talented player. He's
one of the all-time best. A thousand points, you don't have to say much more. He's legit."
"He's earned every one of those points [in his career]," Bandits coach Darris Kilgour said.
"He's one of the guys I respect most in this game."
. . .
The Bandits aren't standing pat in the wake of a slow start to the 2010 season. They made a
few more roster changes leading up to Saturday's game.
The Bandits sent forward Chris Driscoll to the Rochester Knighthawks for second-round draft
choices in 2010 and 2012. Driscoll had been acquired from Toronto in July for Phil Sanderson.
The defender had two goals and three assists in five games.
"That's a roster squeeze," Kilgour said. "I really like Driskee, but I think we have seven
defensive righties and only two defensive lefties. With Clay Hill coming back, that put the
squeeze on the back door. Unfortunately, I thought Driskee was the one guy who was having a
hard time picking up the defense. We needed a roster spot."
Hill had been on the practice squad and was activated for Saturday's game. He had been with
Buffalo for the previous four seasons.
"He's been at practice the last two weeks and looked good," Kilgour said.
In goal, Mike Thompson moved up from the practice squad. He served as the backup goalie
Saturday night as Ken Montour received his fifth straight start. Thompson had been out with a
knee injury. "Mike was signed [Saturday] morning," Kilgour said. "Angus [Goodleaf] goes down
to the practice squad."
Finally, Cody Jacobs was added to the practice squad to take Hill's place. Jacobs played in
two games with the Bandits last season, scoring a goal with two assists.
. . . The Rock had 58 shots on Montour, while Buffalo took 41 shots on
Steve Dietrich. Toronto won 18 of 29 faceoffs. ... The Bandits have never been 1-5 before.
They were 1-4 in 1998, but won their next game and finished 6-6.
