Buffalo Bills owner Ralph C. Wilson Jr. thinks new head coach Chan Gailey is the man to

turn around both his football team and its perennially miserable offense.

"The last few years we haven't been able to score from the 2-foot line," Wilson said Thursday

from his home in Michigan.

"Chan Gailey, I think, is going to be a good head coach," Wilson said. "We like him because

he's had a lot of experience at being a head coach and as an assistant coach on the offensive

side of the ball."

Gailey, 58, was introduced as the Bills' 15th head coach Tuesday. His head coaching experience

consists of two years with the Dallas Cowboys and nine years in the college ranks. His most

recent head-coaching job was at Georgia Tech from 2002 to 2007. Gailey has been an NFL

assistant for 13 seasons and an offensive coordinator for seven of those.

"We wanted someone who's been a head coach if we could get one," Wilson said.

Wilson acknowledged that the Bills' streak of seven straight seasons ranking in the bottom

eight in the NFL in offense has weighed on him as much as everyone else. It's the longest

stretch of offensive futility of its kind in team history.

"It's been painful," he said of watching the Bills' attack. "It's been very painful for the

fans, of which I'm one."

Asked about the Bills' pursuit of big-name coaches Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher, Wilson said,

"We just tried to hire the best guy."

"We're not looking for big names, we're looking for somebody we think can do the job," Wilson

said. "We hired Buddy and he surveyed the field and we hired Chan Gailey. Now we're trying to

go forward."

Beyond that, Wilson would not be lured into a discussion about the Bills' process for finding

Gailey or any other aspect of the team's search.

"There's been speculation all over the place," Wilson said. "There's 500 people they can

speculate on. We just hired the guy we think can do the job. And I think he can. We made the

hire. I think he's going to be very good."
