Bills-Chiefs scouting report
Updated: August 21, 2010, 9:13 AM
Breaking down today's matchup:
Find some offense
Think the Bills have trouble offensively? Kansas City isn't exactly an offensive juggernaut.
The Chiefs' 265.6 yards per game rank 30th in the NFL. Their running game, however, shows some
promise with running back Jamaal Charles, who has 67 carries for 310 yards and three
touchdowns in four starts since taking over for the departed Larry Johnson. Charles has
breakaway speed and is equally dangerous catching passes. But the Chiefs' passing game ranks
among the worst in the league (167.6 ypg) and the offensive line has allowed 40 sacks, the
second most in the NFL. Matt Cassel, the $63 million quarterback, has completed just 53.9
percent of his passes but he certainly misses leading receiver Dwayne Bowe, who is serving the
last of a four-game suspension for using a banned diuretic.
Punch it in
The red zone is a place where the Bills' offense tends to stall. Buffalo has just nine
touchdowns inside the opponent's 20-yard line, tying the St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders
for fewest in the NFL. But it's not as if they've gotten a lot of opportunities inside the 20.
The Bills' 27 red zone possessions are tied with the Chiefs and the Detroit Lions for the
fifth fewest in the league. First-year offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said it would help
if the Bills ran the ball better in the red zone, where they have a 2.8 yards per carry
average. It should help the Bills that they are playing a Chiefs team that has allowed 23
touchdowns in 40 red-zone possessions, which ranks 24th in the NFL.
Where's the 'D'?
Todd Haley brought in a 3-4 scheme but the Chiefs lack the personnel to be successful with the
system and it shows. Kansas City ranks 32nd in yards allowed and 30th in points. The defense
has given up 40-plus points in back-to-back games for the first time since 1983. The Chiefs'
run defense is about as bad as the Bills', allowing 143.8 yards per game, which is 27th in the
NFL. Last week against Denver, they yielded 245 yards. This may be a good time for the Bills
to show off their running game of Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson. Then again ...
Passing fancy
Haley has concerns about the big-play ability of the Bills' Lee Evans and Terrell Owens and
for good reason. The Chiefs are 28th against the pass (250.8 ypg) and have allowed 15
completions of 40 yards or more, the most in the NFL. The Chiefs also have the second fewest
sacks in the NFL (17), although outside linebacker Tamba Hali had three sacks last week
against Denver and Pro Bowl left tackle Ryan Clady. But if quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has
time, Haley's fears could come true and Evans and Owens could have a field day.
Take it away
After allowing only 23 points off turnovers in the season's first 10 games, Kansas City has
permitted 45 points off turnovers the last two weeks. That plays into the hands of the Bills,
who have posted 25 takeaways this year and are on pace to produce their most since 2004, when
they finished with 39. In their meeting last year, five Kansas City turnovers led to 20
Buffalo points. Of course, the Bills need to take care of the ball as well, especially in the
fourth quarter. Fitzpatrick and Trent Edwards have a combined seven interceptions in the
fourth quarter.
Prediction
These are two evenly matched teams and it helps that the Chiefs are playing at home.
Chiefs, 24-20.
